Lee Wilkes is an Australian visual artist, practicing in both oil painting and photography. Between 2013 and 2014 Lee lived on Mer Island (Murray Island), one of the most remote islands in the Torres Strait. This profoundly wild and culturally rich experience altered his perspective on the human relationship with nature, greatly influencing his art practice.
While living on Mer Island, Lee was introduced to Segar Passi, one of Australia’s paramount Torres Strait artists. Segar and Lee formed a great friendship, which led to Lee working as assistant to Segar on many of his prestigious shows with Cairns Regional Gallery and Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGoMA).
Lee currently lives and works in Brisbane. His third solo show at Jan Manton Art entitled Repose (and pursue), will be held in August, 2017.
