Untitled (peels3) by Jake Blaschka
ARTIST NOTES: Fracturing, shifting, rearranging and destroying all signs or symbols in pre-existing imagery sets up a thinking process in which focuses on a play with formalist values, a core focus within my practice. My investigation into the space of a 2D picture plane implies and at times, forces connections with incongruent elements of the original sourced imagery to evoke feelings of harmony, tension or confusion.
Working in a large series is of importance as each individual work’s strengths or weaknesses inform the orchestration of the following work, expanding on similar compositional intentions or creating the last work’s antithesis. The presentation of the works in succession then sets up a dialogue between the individual pieces to prompt a new negotiation of the space, connecting and disconnecting isolated fragments.
