Annie Edney is a Melbourne based artist currently completing a Master of Contemporary Art at the Victorian College of the Arts. With a long history as a professional artist, working with sculptural forms, shadow puppetry and fire art, Edney works consistently with environmental themes, often with Indigenous people, and has evolved a distinct visual language to represent her relationship with the land, with her country, and the planet.  Edney also has a keen interest in ritual, ceremony and celebration.

Edney’s current work is exploring new territories of semi-abstract video and distinctive tondo-focussed photography as part of her Masters, offering excerpts from her heart, her memory, her dreams and her academic research.

Whereas traditional photography submits extracts of reality to our eyes, the artist here is not restrained by the inherent limits of the conventional photographic medium.  She adds plastic creativity and theatrical performance to it, in order to blow life into her interrogation.

An ongoing project in Albury sees Edney using shadow puppetry to tell the stories of Aboriginal Stolen Generation Elders.  Edney is also lead visual artist of the Closing Ceremony Fire Event of the prestigious Woodford Folk Festival - next year will be her 14th.  And she is lead artist at the Collingwood Children’s Farm, making fire art and sculpture for their Winter Solstice Event. For twenty years Edney has completed commissions for festivals, local government, galleries, private people and the corporate sector in shadow puppetry, sculpture, fire art, paintings, drawings, and wearable art. Prior to that she was sole proprietor/owner of Waisted Talent, an exclusive leather garment business based in a renovated warehouse in Fitzroy, Melbourne, with outlets in metropolitan and regional Australia, USA, Europe, and Galleries Lafayette, Singapore.
